A Face in the Cloud - Marvin Street, Cloud Infrastructure Engineer

Here at Cloudreach, we believe that the growth of a great business is fuelled by great people. It is our talented individuals that make Cloudreach the success it is. Today, Cloud Infrastructure Engineer, Marvin Street, tells us about his experience working and keeping it cloudy at Cloudreach.

Great to have you on ‘Face in the Cloud’ Marvin! Tell us about your career so far, how did you end up at Cloudreach?

I was always the kid who would take apart electronics and (unsuccessfully) try to put them back together. Then one day I went to see the movie Hackers in the theater - and 11-year-old Marvin thought it would be so cool to rollerblade around NYC saving the world from evil hackers with his friends. That initial interest eventually turned into a Bachelors of Science in Computer Science and a long, varied career in IT. I began my career doing phone support and transitioned to jobs in Help Desk, Systems Administration, and eventually working in the Cloud.

I found Cloudreach by happenstance. I was casually browsing Glassdoor and came across a company with a VERY high rating and talks of an amazing culture that (according to the reviews - and, eventually, my own personal experience) the company truly believed in. So, even though I was a bit hesitant about consulting and travel, I applied. The rest is, as they say, history - I’ve been a happy Cloudreacher for a year and a half.

How has Cloudreach promoted your personal growth, whether it be personally or professionally?

At the time I applied to Cloudreach, I was in the midst of planning a move from Chicago to Los Angeles. Cloudreach was flexible around letting me live (and work from) where I wanted and because moving to a new city without a pre-existing social structure can be tough, I looked forward to travel weeks with amazing co-workers.

On a more general note, Cloudreach has been very supportive and encouraging of professional growth as well. Internally available resources made it easy to pick up four technical certifications in my short tenure.

What is it like being a remote worker at Cloudreach?

Being remote has both benefits and challenges. I appreciate that my commute is only about 15 steps each morning! It can be really easy to let yourself feel isolated if you’re not careful… However, Cloudreach does a great job of providing opportunities to mitigate that. Between the many interesting and lively Slack channels, virtual cloudy lunches, and the quarterlies (where remote workers are often given the chance to travel to "home" offices for socializing), there are plenty of opportunities to connect with co-workers. Even though we’re all distributed, I still feel connected and part of a team.

Why did you join the API (Alliance for Partnerships & Inclusion) Council?

There’s two major reasons: First, studies show that diversity is good for business. The more varied the thinking and experiences in a room where decisions are being made, the better those decisions and outcomes. Secondly, I’ve never been shy about speaking my mind and joining the API council is a way to add my (often quite loud) voice to conversations that affect those who may not (for whatever reason - be it comfort or otherwise) be able to speak for themselves. It helps that the API council here at Cloudreach is a "bottom-up" endeavor - guided by employee priority and less directed by the leadership team (who have been nothing but receptive, supportive, and encouraging).

Who or what has inspired you throughout your career?

I can’t say that there has been just one person or thing. I’ve been very lucky to have been surrounded by very inspiring and encouraging people - from friends who pushed me to try for jobs that (I felt at the time) were above my skill set and forcing me to rise to the challenge, to being surrounded by absolute rockstar co-workers who motivate me to bring my best to the team and remind me that there’s always another level to aspire to.

What is the #1 item on your bucket list?

Right now, I’m most looking forward to exploring California and getting to know my new home town better. I’ve just begun to feel comfortable here and hit my social stride. I’m excited about the possibilities here in LA.
