“Cloudreach’s AWS expertise in building the environment and providing operational support was invaluable to the success of this project. Cloudreach work very closely with the STV technical and service delivery team to ensure a seamless operation, both on day-to-day operations or when preparing for big events across our platforms.”

Alistair Brown, Chief Technology Office

The Challenge

Despite its name, STV’s reach goes far beyond traditional television. Its official website,, incorporates news, sport, entertainment, weather, competitions, live-streamed events and programming information, and currently reaches millions of unique users each month.

With such a complex range of product offerings and consistently high user figures, STV needs a digital platform that is suitable for its day-to-day operations as well as being scalable for high-pressure live events. Its existing host did not provide the best fit for these needs, whereas the flexibility and capacity of AWS matched STV’s ambitious digital strategy. STV wanted a scalable, high-availability web tier capable of handling its projected traffic levels and providing a stable service to all its applications.

The Solution

The project’s focus was around the migration of existing services, capabilities and data to the AWS cloud, followed by transferring STV’s infrastructure to our Operational Services offering.

More specifically, this included the building of a development environment in AWS, allowing STV to test its web applications and prepare for future development, and automating the build of servers using Chef.

The Partnership

Cloudreach provided the expertise and support, working with the team at STV to deliver a successful transition to the cloud. We integrated our AWS experts with STV’s own technology team, led by Michael Maclean, for a real hands-on approach.

The Outcome

One key benefit of AWS for such a public-facing company as STV is the resilience it brings. As you might imagine, serving high-quality live streaming video to a potential audience of millions brings with it great strain, so AWS allows STV to rapidly scale its usage in line with demand. This proved highly successful during the 2014 FIFA World Cup, with STV providing live coverage that coped well with large bursts of traffic.
