About Channel 4

Channel 4, as a publicly-owned and commercially-funded business, has one of the most unique propositions in broadcasting today. In addition to the main Channel 4 service, the portfolio of channels includes E4, More4, Film4 and 4Music, as well as an ever-growing range of online activities that includes, Channel 4′s bespoke on-demand video service all4 and standalone digital projects. Through its film arm, Film4, Channel 4 is also a key supporter of British filmmaking talent.

The Challenge

Channel 4 is an organisation whose heart is very much in the cloud, and they have long reaped the competitive benefits of this. Channel 4 has a remit to be, in their own words, ‘innovative, experimental and distinctive’, and this attitude extends to their approach to the cloud. The company saw the potential of the cloud very early on, pioneering an on-demand video service as far back as 2006 and becoming early adopters of AWS.

However, as with any AWS setup, Channel 4 recognised that there was scope for improvements to be made.

The Solution

Cloudreach offering a solution based around our structured methodology. Channel 4 was pleased with the suggestions Cloudreach made, and chose to engage us further to implement them on an ongoing basis – after all, FinOps and SecOps are both areas that benefit from constant monitoring and optimisation.

We currently have two of our Ops specialists embedded with the team at Channel 4, collectively spending three days a week on-site to most effectively implement the Optimisation Framework in a phased and managed way, and to pass on new skills face-to-face. Even when not on-site, our specialists undertake daily monitoring of open ports and respond to ad hoc requests, providing the support that’s needed most.

The Partnership

Here at Cloudreach, we obviously love talking about the benefits of the cloud to those who haven’t dipped their toe in quite yet, but we’re equally keen to help veterans get the most out of their existing setups. Our long experience with AWS made us the perfect match for Channel 4’s needs, and the broadcaster engaged us to produce an Optimisation Framework. This is typically a structured methodology designed to identify specific areas of an existing AWS estate than can be improved, and in this case we focused on financial and security opportunities.

The Outcome

The project is ongoing, and Cloudreach continues to work with Channel 4 on a close basis to ensure the company is getting the most out of their AWS estate.
