In this Face in the Cloud, we speak with Deepthi Bellani, Software Engineer at our Pune office in India.

Hi Deepthi, tell us about your career journey so far? What brought you to Cloudreach?

I’ve been working in IT for seven years and I was thinking of relocating to Pune when I heard about Cloudreach through a friend. I went through the Cloudreach website, and Glassdoor, and knew I wanted to be part of this… and here I am.

I am an Electronics and Communication Graduate, though eventually I gained a fascination for Software Development and chose to direct my career that way. I have worked in TechMahindra and ValueLabs as a QA Engineer; I was trained for that role in TechMahindra as a fresher. Today I continue in the same role at Cloudreach.

Tell us about your experience of being a woman working in a traditionally male-dominated space?

There were two female employees who worked in the Pune office for a while before I joined, but none when I was interviewing. I was a little worried but having spoken to some of the people while doing my interview, I felt assured that being the only female employee was nothing I needed to be worried about. I owe it to these guys for making me feel no different after joining the team.

What do you enjoy most about being a software engineer?

I enjoy how exciting and challenging it is to not have to stick to the same task. I get to work on multiple products and technologies so I am continuously learning along the way.

I don’t enjoy being the only software engineer in my entire family! I’m expected to be able to fix everybody’s computers and mobiles!

What advice would you have for people who are considering a career as a software engineer?

There are some misconceptions about a software engineer’s life, like it’s just too much stress. I have learned that if you own the piece of work that you do, it will not cause you any stress but rather it will make you happy when you are successful. Your team will always be there to guide you. I’m glad that I chose my career as a software engineer.

What should future Cloudreachers know about the Pune office before they join?

Other than the perks that they might have heard from the recruiter, I make sure to mention these things when I take interviews:

  • There is freedom of opinion – you can propose a new tool, a new solution or an improvement…and you will be heard!
  • The environment – you can have a casual chat with anybody in the office, no matter their role or level
  • Lastly, we are growing and the office is growing increasingly gender-balanced
What is one thing you like about life at Cloudreach?

It is quite nice that we are able to maintain our cloudy culture as we grow.

Outside of work, what are you passionate about?

I’m a huge movie buff and love reading.

What’s your favorite movie and what do you like to read?

As of now, I enjoy watching ‘The Conjuring’ series and I love the ‘Harry Potter’ books. I enjoyed living in that fantasy world while reading them.

If you could have dinner with three famous people, living or dead, who would you choose?

Ellen DeGeneres, Heath Ledger and Galileo Galilei.

Favorite cloudy lunch spot?

It’s enjoyable when the entire team makes it to lunch and am able to interact with all of them.  My favorite place to go is Paasha!
