A Face in the Cloud – Jewell Jones, Cloud Engagement Manager, New York

What is your role at Cloudreach?
I’m a project manager – or Cloud Engagement Manager (CEM) as we call the role at Cloudreach – for our client-facing infrastructure assessments and deployment projects. I also like to refer to myself as a load balancer.
What motivated you to join Cloudreach?
After spending many years managing the deployments of enterprise cloud applications for Fortune 500 companies, I wanted to switch my focus to working with some other cloud enterprise technology. When I came across Cloudreach, it seemed like a good fit given that it provided enterprise cloud infrastructure services to big clients and is still at a stage in which I could have a voice in the company’s direction.
What do you find most challenging about your role?
I think the hardest part of my role and throughout my career is having a chip on my shoulder as a black female who is underrepresented in Tech. I’ve always been in the project trenches of sorts right there with the product owners and engineers speaking the language. That’s actually the easy part. The hard part is that sometimes I spend a lot of time overthinking things that I really shouldn’t given my career experience. However, I’ve been really lucky to work for managers that have been trusting of my judgement and provide guidance even when I sometimes make a mistake. It’s been a critical success factor in my career.
How has working at Cloudreach impacted your personal and professional growth?
From a professional side, working at Cloudreach has helped me expand my knowledge of the development operations (DevOps) area of technology. I now know more about what’s usually hidden when you’re focused on the application level. Personally, I’m more confident in my ability to determine what’s important to focus on and what’s not to move ahead with my team. There’s no way I’ll ever know about every single feature in the technology we help our clients deploy and manage.
How do you define success?
Having the flexibility to take risks even if I’m not sure how things are going to turn out.
Tell us about an individual who has greatly influenced you.
My late grandmother greatly influenced me. She was a retired nurse who loved playing Rummy and Solitaire. I didn’t realize it until I was older, but having to manually add really high numbers (at least for a 4 year old) and being strategic and logical to win those games planted a seed for my career.
Whether it’s the awesome locations of our offices, cloudy lunch or beer in the fridge, what’s your favorite Cloudy perk?
Beyond the free cloudy lunch on Friday, I like that we’re allotted a certain amount of time every week for personal development activities. It helps that Cloudreach supports us with keeping up with the new technologies by way of certifications, webinars and conferences.
What advice would you give others looking to pursue a career at Cloudreach? If you’re okay with change being the only constant, this is a great place to work. The company is rapidly growing and the products we work with add something new every day, so it’s important to be very agile in how you execute on your responsibilities.
