A Face In The Cloud – Guillermo Fisher, Cloud Enablement Leader

Keep It Cloudy News 12th February 2019

Here at Cloudreach, we believe that the growth of a great business is fuelled by great people. It is our talented individuals that make Cloudreach the success it is. Today Guillermo Fisher, Cloud Enablement Leader of our Data & Analytics group, tells us about his experience working and keeping it cloudy at Cloudreach.

Hi Guillermo, tell us a bit about your career so far? What brought you to Cloudreach?

I’ve been working in tech for about 16 years. When I first started out I was a graphic designer.  Since then I have built applications, APIs, cloud infrastructures, and teams to support products and services.

I know some of the Cloudreachers in the Norfolk office through old jobs and local Meetups – they all had great things to say about Cloudreach. When the time was right, I made the move and have since enjoyed working with them and meeting people from our other offices.

What are you passionate about outside of work?

Aside from my family (and long naps), I’m most passionate about enabling underrepresented groups – in particular people of color – to build long, successful careers in technology. One way I’ve been able to do that is by creating the 757ColorCoded meetup.

Can you tell us a bit more about 757ColorCoded and its mission?

The mission of 757ColorCoded reads: “We exist to educate and empower local people of color to achieve careers in technology and improve their lives.” We provide education through free classes, workshops, and Meetups. The group also offers resources for learning about programming and other disciplines. To learn more about us, check out 757ColorCoded.org.

We hear there are some 757ColorCoded meetup events coming up. What can attendees expect from these events? What will they come away with?

We’ve partnered with the Norfolk Public Library to provide sessions for the community that will focus on careers in technology. I’ll be talking about a few of the less technical roles that exist in technology organizations, and Troy Connor – another Norfolk Cloudreacher who is part of the 757ColorCoded leadership team – will be introducing people to some basic cloud computing concepts. The sessions will be held once every month starting in February and will run until December. We’ll also be partnering with a major cloud services provider to offer specific, cloud-based training… more details to come soon!

What is the best piece of career advice you have ever received?

Find a mentor. I was told by one of my old managers that I should seek out people who possess the skills I want to have and set time aside to get direction from those people. A good mentor provides you with career advice, challenges you to be a better person, and can make you aware of otherwise unknown career advancement opportunities.

If you could pick one actor to play you in the movie of your life, who would you choose?

I honestly don’t know! I’ve never thought about that! There are a few great Afro-Latino (I’m Afro-Latino… both of my parents are Panamanian) actors around like J. August Richards and Laz Alonso. It’d be an honor to have any of them play me in a movie, although I’m not nearly as good-looking as any of those guys!
