A Face in the Cloud – Angelos Efthimiou, AWS re:Invent 2018 Special

31st October 2018
Angelos Efthimiou

Cloudreach will once again be sponsoring AWS re:Invent this year. With just a few weeks to go until the event kicks off in Las Vegas, we caught up with Angelos Efthimiou as he prepares to share the stage with our customer Volkswagen Financial Services in a speaking session titled: ‘Build Cloud-Native Applications in an Enterprise Environment‘.

Angelos, It has been well over a year since your last Face in the Clouds. What’s new?

It has! And Cloudreach years go by so much faster! The biggest news, since our last chat, is probably my new role as Cloud Enablement Leader. I am extremely excited and feel very privileged that I got the opportunity to lead one of our two Professional Services teams in DACH.

What changes have you noticed in the cloud industry since then?

One of the benefits of my new role is that I get to talk to a much larger customer group than I used to. What I have observed is that the market in Germany has matured overall and expectations are on the rise. I truly believe that we are currently crossing the chasm in terms of cloud adoption. A year ago I remember that we were still trying to evangelize the public cloud and introduce our customers to our motto: “Not if. When”. Now, just a year later, customers and partners are pushing us to be bolder, think bigger and focus on execution. Infrastructure & Application Modernization, Big Data, Containerization are some of the hot topics that we get approached about. What I find particularly interesting is that our German enterprise customers are currently more interested in greenfield projects, building new solutions rather than large-scale migrations. However, I am sure this will be more balanced by the next time we talk.

Are you looking forward to re:Invent this year?

I am extremely excited to attend re:invent. Especially given that it is my first time. I have been to other events in Las Vegas but I am very curious to experience the magnitude and energy that the event has a reputation for. It will give me a unique opportunity to connect to a lot of our partners, customers and prospects in a single location while having the opportunity to draw inspiration from all the new announcements, training, and discussions.

Personally, I am looking forward to any new announcements in the realm of Big Data and Machine Learning. I love when science fiction from a few years ago becomes reality and I see some of our customer leverage technologies to transform everyday products. The future looks extremely exciting.

One demo that I am particularly interested in is the  “Two Blocks Away” game, the winner of our latest Hackathon. I haven’t had a chance to have a go when it has been demonstrated at Cloudreach so now I have to travel all the way to Las Vegas to lay my eyes on it.

We hear you will be talking at the event this year, can you tell us a bit more about that?

I am, of course, most passionate about my talk together with Daniel Matthies (Global IT Lead of Digitalization at Volkswagen Financial Services) on how to “Build Cloud-Native Applications In An Enterprise Environment” (BAP205-S). It is a great success story about how we worked with VWFS to enable and empower their markets & brands to develop enhanced customer experiences at scale. Building the underlying global platform with AWS Vending Machine and Central Authentication (code name Bifrost) could have been challenging enough for most customers. Volkswagen Financial Services is, however, also one of Germany’s top financial institutions and operates therefore in a highly regulated environment.

Why should attendees come and see your presentation? What will they come away with?

I truly believe that our story can help other enterprises facing similar challenges to learn and incorporate some of our findings. Many of the solutions that our teams built can be reused. At Cloudreach, internally, we have also implemented an AWS Vending machine to provide everyone who wants to learn and experiment to access self-service accounts. I just used it the other week to get a new Sandbox account to study for my AWS Solutions Architect Associate re-certification.

Apart from that, I know that Daniel is a very entertaining speaker who is always keen to share his experience. An opportunity not to be missed. Just sign up here for our session at Tuesday, Nov 27, 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM– Venetian, Level 4, Lando 4202.
