Cloud is the new normal in IT. Get over IT!
The time has come! For years, people involved in real cloud technologies have had to explain and defend what it is, justify its role in ‘IT’ and explain that ‘public’ cloud is not open to the public. This has got to change. Cloud is the new normal. It is the only viable form of IT. Get over IT!
Old IT involves buying buildings, filling them with oodles of hardware and software you don’t know if you need, or if indeed it is truly fit for purpose. On top of it all it is also weighing down your company’s balance sheet. This is no longer a viable way to provide IT capabilities.
New things eventually become the new normal. For years, families used to gather around the radio to listen to news, entertainment and political messages. At some point a transition took place and TV became the media of choice for all. This is now changing again: both the conception and production of content as well as distribution channel have upended the media industry. Streaming is the new normal and anyone can do it. From anywhere. At any time.
We used to think of a horse as the only way to get around until the car became the new normal for personal transportation. Looking forward, within 10-15 years, several major cities around the world are predicted to have fleets of little electric self-driving cars for you to hail and step into to get around. Normal cars will be banned, which removes the need for parking spaces, enabling us to convert garages into parks and green spaces which, in turn, improves air quality and reduces noise in our inner cities. This will also become the new normal.
Who can make this happen?
The entire IT industry must change, and it is time to call a spade a spade!
Those of us involved with “public cloud” are all guilty parties here, repeatedly feeling the need to explain and call out “public cloud”, or defend why it is much better and why it should be “trusted”. The recent debacle with old IT at Tesco bank, at Talk Talk and a high profile example – like Target where “data gushed out of its mainframes” says it all – demonstrates that old IT is unfit for purpose, can’t be trusted and shouldn’t be used.
Proponents of old IT are the ones who should feel the need to defend what is clearly an old and outdated approach, in an era where IT brings faster, more robust, more scalable and more innovative ways of bringing a product or service to market. We must all change the way we communicate and think about IT to emphasise cloud’s place as the new normal.
Why is this important?
It confuses people. Still. This is especially true for non-IT executives who don’t have the time to get into the detail or nuances of IT, and are wary of expressions like “public cloud”. IT. That’s what it is. It’s the new normal for IT.
We are standing on the cusp of a revolution in what IT can do for companies and public sector bodies alike. What is holding us back? That some people still refuse to accept reality, and actively seek to adopt old IT models, stuck in the past thinking old IT is still a credible option.
“Cloud” is now synonymous with IT, and it will shape tomorrow’s industry leaders. Those who don’t seize this huge opportunity risk drifting into oblivion. To help those who need help, we all need to start by always thinking “public cloud” when we talk about IT. Cloud is the new normal. It is IT.
What’s stopping you?
We believe tomorrow’s leaders will be those who take advantage of cloud technologies to beat the competition. Cloudreach’s mission is to enable this outcome through intelligent and innovative cloud adoption by providing capabilities to enable, integrate and operate cloud platforms.
If you want to talk about, or even better, are ready to engage and capitalise on the new normal of IT, get in touch. We were the first company in the world to migrate an enterprise data centre to the cloud in 2012, and we continue to work at the cutting edge of cloud technology to ensure our enterprise customers adopt cloud quickly, efficiently and at scale.
